18th of July

For most the 2008 WSOP is now over, but there are nine players still dreaming of becoming world champion when they reconvene in November to play out the final table. This year’s series has often been referred to as the year of the pro, but with such a large field it was always going to be likely that the final would consist of players few have previously heard of. That is now confirmed as being the case but there were still a couple of famous names left as play was reduced to the last…

Choosing the Battleground

It was Sun Tsu who once said that if you understood yourself and your enemy then you need not fear the outcome of a thousand battles… or words to that effect. It has been a long time since I last read that book and I couldn’t be bothered to dig it out and locate the exact wording but I am sure that you get the meaning. There are many great works out there that have deeply embedded poker meanings that have absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with poker, or at least it seems that way on…

I am a Rock

The heads-up part of the $10k PLO was one of the most fun parts of the whole trip for me. RiverDave had texted to say that Marty was out in 5th, which was a shame as he was sixth of six remaining when I left for dinner with Martin and The Camel. It just felt like a nice bonus to discover there’d been a mix-up and to return to find Marty still sitting there with just one other guy.
The Camel pointed out that he’d barely seen a single Irishman throughout the whole series and now there seemed to…

Managing the Short Stack by Mark Vos

A couple of weeks back, I won the $2,000 No-Limit Hold ‘em event at the World Series of Poker*. It’s a great honor to have the bracelet. The $800,000 that I got for first place is, of course, awesome. For most of the tournament, I was short stacked. But, I think I played my short stack well and, for this tip, I thought I’d share some thoughts I have on short-stack play.
The key to my short-stack survival was that I was able to steal enough pots to stay alive. There was only one play I could…

Just for One Day

For the first time in my life, I cried after getting knocked out of a poker tournament. It wasn’t for me, it was for Rob. Rob was the man who made poker what it is today. He was the inspiration behind Late Night Poker, The Poker Show and everything that was a million miles ahead of everything. He was also the only guy in the world who believed in me after I stopped believing myself. I miss him. Life goes on and if anybody would have loved to see Keith the Camel Hawkins still in when it…

To Play or not to Play?

This place wears everybody down eventually. You’d hardly recognise that confident lot that breezed into town about six weeks ago thinking and acting like it was going to be so easy. Their own mothers wouldn’t know most of them now. At least the noise level has gone down. The free drink poured out by online sites have taken a heavy toll on those left standing. Jesse May was at several of these parties. He’s a useless drinker but he tries his best, you can’t ask for any…

World Series of Poker Europe - Main Event Champion Is Crowned

The World Series of Poker Europe was a period on any sentence that talks about how the Internet has changed the sport. Before today Annette “Annette_15″ Obrestad had the glorious distinction of being the best multi-table tournament player that the internet has to offer. In certain snobbish corners of the sport, the “poker elite” behave as if being the best tournament player in cyberspace is the equivalent of being the best race car driver in Hazzard County.

World Series of Poker Europe - Day 8, September 13th, 2007

It was about two in the afternoon (British Time) when the evil was exorcised from the gaming floor at the World Series of Poker Europe. It was at this time that Phil Hellmuth was eliminated from competition. Usually when really bad things are killed off it takes an exploding death star or a farm house from Kansas falling on malevolent character to keep them down. In this case all it took was a short stacked Phil Hellmuth running into a very determined player.

World Series of Poker Europe - Day 7, September 12th, 2007

Isabelle Mercier was eliminated with extreme prejudice when her pair of sixes failed to hold up against Tong G’s full house. During the previous hand Isabelle had the opportunity to eliminate Tony. She had him lined up for the kill with a pair of Queens when all he was holding was a suited A-K. During the hand her bravado got the best of her, and she took the opportunity to stick it to her flailing opponent.

World Series of Poker Europe - Day 6, September 11th, 2007

The sixth day didn’t end with a bang - it was more like a flushing sound. Day 2A of the World Series of Poker Europe Main Event concluded with a pair of last minute eliminations. Pat Scanlan ended Ian Munns tournament on the very last hand of the night while Gus Hansen took out Chris Bjorin in a hand that had all the excitement and energy of a Bob Newhart running the 40 yard dash.

World Series of Poker Europe - Day 5, September 10th, 2007

On Monday Phil Hellmuth arrived in grand fashion atop a double decker bus. Phil is a legend, a bit of a knob, but a legend nonetheless. His entrance was as big as his presence in the sport. On Day 1B Doyle Brunson’s exit was far less grand and in direct contrast to man who surpassed him as the most decorated player in World Series of Poker history.

World Series of Poker Europe Event 2 - 5,000 + 250 Pot Limit Omaha

The first event at the World Series of Poker Europe was won by a guy from Germany. Today an Italian was crowned the champion of Event 2. The last time folks from these two nations dominated a European struggle, well… really bad things happened. Seeing as neither of these winners has dreams of world domination or a tasteless little mustache, we think the EU you are safe.

World Series of Poker Europe - Day 4, September 9th, 2007

Jennifer Harman may not have won any bracelets at the WSOP Europe, but she has had the uncanny knack of somehow being wherever the action was happening. She was a runner up in the first event, and on Day 1A of the Main Event, took out Andy Bloch.
